We use the recently developed brozone theory of plastic deformation [1] to investigate the transmission of high stresses to the neighborhood of a defect in a solid material. Here, we correct and extend previous findings on the expansion of a circular hole in a large plate [2]. By taking advantage of the simple geometry of the problem, we are able to observe analytically features such as linear vis co elastic flow at small stresses, strain hardening at larger stresses, and a dynamic transition to vis co plas tic ity at the yield stress. Our analysis predicts the formation of a well-defined plastic zone around the hole for hard materials, and a more diffuse plastic zone for soft materials. The deviatoric stress always exceeds the yield stress on the boundary of the hole, but its value also depends on the softness of the material. We study the shape stability of the hole and speculate that our results may be related to the dynamics of fracture. [1] M.L. Falk and J.S. Langer, Phys. Rev. E 57, 7192 (1998). [2] J.S. Deeper Roots: A Century of America’s Music is a radio show coming to you from Sonoma County, California. The two hour shows are broadcast on two community radio stations, one in the small town of Occidental (KOWS), the other from Santa Rosa (KWTF). Shows are available as podcasts after airing on deeperroots.podomatic.com.
Our shows explore a wide variety of roots music including gospel, country, bluegrass, jazz, blues, and all of the many diverse sub-genres that have evolved over the past century. While we generally work from a particular theme on a weekly basis, we also go free-form when we get a chance. Dave Stroud, the host of the shows, provides a curated and in-depth tour of much of the music, providing stories and background about the many different performers, songs, songwriters, and forms that make up the fabric of America’s roots music.
We are a Bay Area based Comedy group that does Sketch Comedy & Videos, a Radio Show (via kWTF Radio) called “Opposing Media PodCastaways” and Live shows in the north bay area in the style of MST3k (Mystery Science Theater 3000). You can catch our videos and sketches here on the website, our radio show weekly – available for streaming here as well – and check in often for info & flyers on our live movie-riffing shows locally as well.
